Why does it take so long to build roads?

Building a new roadway involves many steps - planning, design, right-of-way and construction just to name a few. According to the Florida DOT, it now takes nearly 13 years to go from "CONCEPT" to "CONCRETE".

Once a street is under construction, road builders often encounter problems with utility conflicts, design plan changes, labor shortages, equipment breakdowns, and the difficulty of working next to fast-moving traffic. For motorists, the best advice is to have patience and drive cautiously through work zones. Observe warning signs.

Remember, most road contractors would like nothing better than to complete their work and move on to the next job.
