What are traffic cameras used for?

Cameras have been installed at many intersections throughout the County to assist Traffic Engineering staff in reducing traffic congestion. The cameras monitor traffic back-ups, adjust traffic signal timing, and provide real-time traffic information to technicians. Technicians use the cameras on a daily basis to monitor traffic flow and adjust timing patterns.

Cameras are not used to catch speeders or red light runners. The State of Florida does not permit the use of cameras for enforcement of traffic laws, although that may change in the future. In 15 states and Washington D.C., laws have been passed to allow traffic enforcement cameras, commonly known as "RED LIGHT CAMERAS", and they are currently in use.
