Traffic
Engineering is responsible for...
the traffic safety and the operational efficiency of the County
Roadway network. This involves the design, installation, maintenance,
and operation of traffic control devices such as traffic signals,
traffic signs, and pavement markings. This department also conducts
engineering studies and reviews new development site plans to
determine the need for modifying or adding traffic control devices |

| The
primary responsibilities of Traffic Engineering includes the
following: |
- Design,
install, operate and maintain traffic signals throughout
the County, including the cities of Vero Beach, Sebastian,
Fellsmere and Indian River Shores.
- Design,
install and maintain traffic signs and pavement markings
(striping) on County roadways.
- Identify
the need for additional traffic signals, signs and pavement
markings, as warranted by traffic engineering studies, as
a result of changing traffic conditions.
- Perform
traffic counts on County roadways and maintain a traffic
count database.
- Assist
in maintaining the County Transportation Concurrency Management
Program in coordination with the County Department of Community
Development and the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO).
- Optimize
traffic signal timing throughout the County.
- Operate
the County central computer traffic signal system.
- Evaluate
the traffic impact of new residential and commercial development.
- Maintain
a traffic accident database.
- Coordinate
road closings.
