| What can be done to reduce the number of speeding vehicles in my neighborhood? |
This is the most common complaint received by Traffic Engineering, and also one of the most difficult to resolve. Most people feel that simply adding signs such as "SPEED LIMIT 15" or "CHILDREN AT PLAY" will fix the problem. Unfortunately, this is not true. Studies have shown that motorists will ignore signs that they feel are not reasonable. In Indian River County, and throughout the State of Florida, the speed limit in residential areas is 30 miles per hour, even if a "SPEED LIMIT 30" sign is not posted. In an effort to remind motorists, Traffic Engineering has posted "SPEED LIMIT 30" signs at the main entrances to most residential areas, but not along every residential street. We have found that the most effective tool in reducing residential speeding is increased law enforcement. Traffic Engineering works closely with the County Sheriff's Office to identify residential streets with speeding problems, and target those areas for increased enforcement. If you feel that your street may be a candidate for increased speed enforcement, please email us at traffic@ircgov.com |
