Why isn‘t a traffic signal installed to reduce the number of accidents at our intersection?

Traffic signals do not always prevent accidents. In many cases, accidents actually increase after a traffic signal is installed. Following is a list of the main criteria used by traffic engineers in determining the need for a traffic signal:

  • Traffic Volume
  • Pedestrian Volume
  • Closeness of other major intersections
  • Accident History (number and type of collisions)

After reviewing the above data and comparing it to accepted national standards, the traffic engineer may decide to install a traffic signal if, in his/her judgement, the signal will improve the overall flow of traffic and operate effectively with good public compliance.

If you feel that an intersection may be a candidate for a traffic signal, please email us at traffic@ircgov.com
