The Indian River Lagoon Greenway (formerly known as the Flinn Tract), was acquired by Indian River County in 1998 through a combination of funding sources including the County, the Florida Inland Navigation District, and the Indian River Land Trust. The main trail begins within a beautiful maritime hammock with a short boardwalk crossing a slough and then the trail continues through additional hammock. A boardwalk will take you from the edge of the hammock to the shoreline of the Indian River Lagoon, through a broad expanse of mangroves. Two viewing platforms (one at a mangrove pond and one at the end of the trail) allow the public to enjoy birdwatching or just relaxing by the edge of the water after a long hike.
The preservation of this tract is one element of a Greenway effort by the County that includes the Oslo Riverfront Conservation Area and the South Oslo Riverfront Conservation Area. These preserved lands serve to buffer the Lagoon from adjacent development, and aid in water quality protection and establishment of wildlife corridors.
Recent land management activity includes the removal of exotic Australian pine from the site. The pine canopy and sub-canopy was harvested and converted to mulch. it is the County's plan to continue to treat for re-growth, while at the same time allowing for the establishment of native species in these treated areas.
We encourage the public to enjoy observing wildlife and learning about our conservation efforts, but please remember to leave only footprints on site!
