Description
The Sebastian Scrub Conservation Area is a 10-acre tract located on the west side of Schumann Drive approximately 0.5 miles north of the intersection at Barber Street. The parcel is part of a larger wildlife corridor that includes the 179 acre Sebastian Stormwater Park (owned by the St. John's River Water Management District) to the northwest, and the County's 163-acre Sebastian Harbor Conservation Area to the north of the stormwater park.
This preserve is part of the Sebastian Area-Wide Florida Scrub-Jay Habitat Management Area, which was a large-scale conservation plan designed to off-set impacts to Florida scrub-jay habitat within the Sebastian Highlands. The site is dominated by oak scrub and scrubby flatwoods, which is considered desirable habitat for the scrub-jay. The County has undertaken clearing of trails and firebreaks, and has installed an informational kiosk and educational signage to provide visitors with an overview of the wildlife that may be observed on-site. Future plans include development of a smart phone app that will provide the visitor with an interactive trail map, as well as other information about the preserve.
Scrub-jays have been observed on-site, and the County has implemented an active program to monitor these birds so that our habitat management efforts can be designed to maximize the potential habitat for this species. By creating optimal scrub-jay habitat, the County will be providing desirable habitat for numerous other species known to utilize these vegetative communities.
We encourage the public to enjoy observing wildlife and learning about our conservation efforts. Please keep in mind that the scrub-jay is a federally protected species, and it is unlawful to feed or harass these birds. As with all of our conservation areas - please remember to leave only footprints on site!
