The South Prong Preserve was acquired through the purchase of two parcels located on the north and south side of CR 510 (85th Street), and includes a portion of the South Prong of the Sebastian River. The majority of the uplands associated with these parcels consist of former citrus groves that are now fallow. The bottomland forest associated with the floodplain is dominated by a mature canopy of cypress, water hickory, cabbage palm, and other mixed hardwoods.
Conservation of this tract is particularly important as a buffer for the Sebastian River. Removal of active agricultural operations helps to reduce the possibility of nutrient inputs from pesticides and herbicides. Conservation of the site also eliminates the potential for the area to be converted into residential development, which would result in other types of impacts to the River. The Preserve is not currently open to the public as the County has not completed planned amenities for the property. The County plans to develop passive recreation opportunities on the site as funding becomes available. Please refer to our website home page for the map showing the location of this Preserve. We encourage the public to enjoy observing wildlife and learning about our conservation efforts.
