Over the years, rising sea levels and more frequent storm events have caused repetitive damage to Florida’s coastlines. In order to combat these damages, various methods of shoreline protection and restoration activities have been studied in order to determine the best options for maintaining beaches.
Common factors that are considered when assessing methods of shoreline protection and restoration in Florida include; sea turtle & shore bird nesting habitat, protection of nearshore hardbottom reefs, protection of infrastructure/coastal development, and the public’s interest.
Beach & Dune Nourishment is a heavily studied and common method of shoreline protection and restoration within the state, and is the recommended strategy for the beaches within Indian River County. To read more about IRC’s recommended strategies you can read the IRC 2019 Beach Preservation Plan.
Before and after any beach & dune nourishment takes place, extensive pre & post construction monitoring is preformed to assure no natural resources or nesting activities are impacted.
