The Sector 5 project area is a 3-mile section of shoreline that extends just north of Tracking Station Beach Park south to the Gables Oceanfront Condominiums. The Sector 5 project beaches sustained damage from Hurricane Matthew (2016) and Hurricane Irma (2017). This project was designed and permitted to restore sand losses from these storms and from background erosion by placing approximately 171,000 cubic yards of beach compatible sand and approximately 121,000 native salt-tolerant dune plants.
Local Funding for Sector 5 Beach and Dune Restoration project is provided by a portion of Local Option Tourist Tax, FEMA Project Worksheets, and Local Government Funding Request Grant 19IR3 reimbursements. The project came in under budget at approximately $6,000,000.
The Sector 5 Beach & Dune Restoration Project was completed ahead of schedule on February 8th, 2021. Currently the County is completing post construction permit requirements including, but not limited to, Nearshore Hardbottom Monitoring, Sea Turtle Nest Monitoring, & Shorebird Nest Monitoring.
The Project entails planting approximately 135,000 additional native salt tolerant dune plants within the completed Sector 5 Beach and Dune Restoration Project (IRC-1923), located over 3.1 miles of the Atlantic Ocean beach in central Indian River County To avoid adverse impacts to nesting sea turtles, construction is expected to be completed during the period from November 1, 2021 and April 30, 2022
