Indian River County is broken into separated our 22.6 miles of coast line into 8 beach management sectors. These sectors are broken up based on coastal condition and jurisdictional boundaries, as well as dominant coastal properties, beach nourishment events, historic shoreline/volume changes, upland development, and environmental resources.
Sectors 1 & 2 is the 3.1 miles of beach located from the Sebastian Inlet to the Seaview Subdivision. Indian River County has a Memorandum of Understanding with the Sebastian Inlet Taxing District, which authorizes the Inlet District to perform management and sand bypassing onto this stretch of beach. Sector 1 &2 are both considered Critical Erosion Areas by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP).
Sector 3 is the 6.6 miles of beach located from the Seaview Subdivision to Turtle Trail Beach Access Park. This area includes 6.4 miles of critically eroded beaches. Seawalls are sporadically seen throughout this sector.
Sector 4 is the 3.2 miles of beach located from Turtle Trail to Surf Lane. This Sector has applied to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) for Critically Eroded Status and currently does not meet the States requirements for such status. The southern portion of Sector 4 has been nourished under Sector 5 Projects as the southern most 2,000 feet of Sector 4 is considered critically eroded by FDEP.
Sector 5 is the 2.6 miles of beach located from Surf Lane to the Riomar Golf Course and is considered critically eroded by FDEP. The sector was established based upon it’s heavily armored (seawalled) segment of shoreline.
Sector 6 is the 2 miles of beach located from the Riomar Golf Course to Treasure Cove Subdivision. This sector is considered an accretional stretch of beach and has no planned projects at this time.
Sector 7 is the 2.2 miles of beach located from Treasure Cove Subdivision to the Floralton Beach Subdivision in South County. This sector, except for a few 100 accretional feet in the north, is considered Critically Eroded by FDEP. Seawalls have been constructed throughout much of this sector and the majority of the shoreline is closely hugged by Nearshore Hardbottom Reefs.
Sector 8 is the 2.1 miles of beach located from the Floralton Beach Subdivision to the St. Lucie County line (approximately Round Island Beach Park). This Sector has no planned projects at this time.
